Mid-Century Modern a Classic style?
At the height of the what we now refer to as part of the Mid-Century Modern Era there's this picture of a young boy in the middle of the living room, with a garden rake. It's 1975 and I'm up to my ankles in grass-green shag rug. Saturday afternoon and it's MY job to rake the carpet -- I HATE that ugly rug! Not that it matters; my dumb brothers will just make it a mess when they pretend they are Professional Wrestlers like Andre the Giant. And later that night, when my parents host their weekly home party? That stupid rug will only get rolled up and shoved off to the side to make room for a dance floor. I take in more of the picture around me and there's the bright orange Berkline chair pushed up against the brown paneled wall my Dad installed not too long ago, the console TV set with woven fabric speakers and a "hifi" stereo which will play Guy Lombardo, Lawrence Welk, polka music and Frank Sinatra.
Everything around me seems old, tired and outdated. Because, in my bedroom are the latest and greatest!:
I have an "Ease on Down the Road" poster that glows in the dark with my blacklight bulb.
Under my 100% polyester liesure shirt and bell bottom jeans in the closet are my platform shoes.
Playing on my transister radio are ABBA, Bee Gees, Elton John and K.C. and the Sunshine Band; made FAR OUT with a single earplug popped in my ear.
Nearly 40 years later you may be astounded to find in my home:
A shag rug in my living room (complete with rake)
An orange Berkline chair and a matching ottoman.
Other Mid-Century modern furniture and accessories.
I have come full circle. I may still listen to those classic tunes from my childhood. But, gone are the platform shoes, liesure shirt and big, wide bell bottoms. Those haven't stood the test of time. But, the quality furniture, versatile textures and colors of that era have. Mixed with updated paints and fabric and a designers eye, I love the comfort these pieces bring to my surroundings.
So, I guess that makes ME a Classic?
